General information about the SBB split flap displays (originals)
These split flap displays are original SBB split flap displays from modules used in platform display boards. Until they were replaced by digital information systems, they were in use across the whole of Switzerland. A split flap display is made up of two parts, generally an upper and lower side. They are made of thin, stable, blue plastic with white text or have a red background with white text. Special messages have a blue or red background and white or yellow text.
Due to usage (in some cases over several years), exposure to the weather and varying temperatures, different shades of blue / other colours may be found in the same set. There may be visible signs of wear such as scratches or chipped edges at the points where the split flap displays ‘rotated’ in the modules.
The split flap displays were saved from landfill by Reto Da Pozzo. In his workshop, he ensures that the split flap displays gain a new lease of life. Reto Da Pozzo has many years of experience as an SBB passenger attendant in the TGV Zürich International team and manages this project, called ‘Blumen Holz Werk’, as an official SBB licensee.
