Mifuko is a member of the World Fair Trade Organisation. The Mifuko workshops employ many physically disabled or HIV positive women. By producing baskets, the women earn a good income for the education of their children and the development of their communities. The production of environmentally friendly and recycled products is as important to the founders as the long-term security of a regular income for the women.
Mifuko means ‘bag’ in Swahili, and the company was founded by Minna Impiö and Mari Martikainen in Helsinki in 2009. Drawing inspiration from the colours, textures and vibrancy of Africa, the products are made in Kenya from locally available materials, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern, Finnish design.
